Snapchat is in the midst of a very hyped up marketing campaign with its new video recording spectacles. The company which was formed in 2011 by Evan Spiegel and is worth 2.1 billions, claimed it to be “A lot of fun. Kind off like one of those products you don’t understand until you use it…”
It allows you to share 10 second moments throughout your day that last for 24 hours. You can also message friends but those messages disappear too. Recently Snapchat changed their name to Snap Inc. and are no longer just an app but a camera company, hence the spectacles! They announced the name change in the wall street journal and the company is being valued at 20-25 billions dollars which would make it the third most valuable tech company at its market debut, after Ali Baba and of course facebook.
Putting spectacles out that are made by the company themselves gives Snap Inc. more control over the content that goes on their app. So what’s so cool about the spectacles? We got a pair and used them for a week, so here’s what we like about them:
They’re simple. There’s one button for one thing. Putting a camera on glasses is something that’s been tried before a la “Google”. They’re not about accessing information, they’re strictly about fun. In a world of technology and social media which is closing us from each other, there’s some products doing the opposite and Snap Spectacles are one of them.
